I paint not what is visible, but what lies beneath the surface.
My work explores the psychological relationship between the human figure and architectural space. Doors, windows, walls, and empty interiors are not narrative elements but metaphors for thresholds, memory, and the experience of being.
I am drawn to moments of suspension—when time appears to slow and silence becomes almost tangible. My figures inhabit spaces where tension and stillness coexist, inviting viewers to bring their own experiences and interpretations rather than follow a predetermined story.
Light, for me, is not merely illumination, nor is darkness simply its absence. Both are psychological forces that shape perception and emotion. Through layers of oil paint, restrained color, and carefully constructed atmosphere, I seek to create paintings that reveal themselves gradually, rewarding sustained attention rather than immediate consumption.
Rather than pursuing changing artistic trends, I remain committed to developing a personal visual language. I hope my paintings encourage viewers to pause, look again, and discover meanings that unfold over time.
Born in Ankara in 1960, Nilgün Altan developed an interest in painting during her high school years. Although she completed her university education in a different field, she continued painting and received training in color and drawing at various studios. She also worked in ceramics and mosaic art.
Altan published and edited three art magazines, two in print and one digital. In 2015, she became one of the founders of the Anatolian Visual Arts Association and served as the Chair of the Board for three terms.
A member of UPSD, AGSAD, and SK, Nilgün Altan has participated in more than one hundred national and international group exhibitions, as well as ten solo exhibitions. She has also taken part in the ArtAnkara Contemporary Art Fair nine times through various galleries.
Her works are included in numerous private collections in Turkey and abroad. Since 2005, the artist has continued her practice in her own studio.
